According to the NCRB report, out of 19 metro cities with a population of more than 20 lakhs, Delhi recorded the maximum number of cases of fraud and forgery in 2020.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau report, Delhi recorded the highest number of 4,445 cases in the category of economic offense. It followed this by Mumbai with 3,927 and then Jaipur with 3,217 cases. However, the rate of such crime (cases per 10 lakh population) was the highest in Jaipur at 10.4.
The crime rates in Delhi and Mumbai were 2.72, and 2.13 respectively. Patna, Lucknow, and Hyderabad also reported higher rates of economic crimes than Delhi, and Mumbai being 4.97, 7.67, and 4.42 respectively.
At the same time, if we look at the total crimes, there has been a decline in the cases of such crime in Delhi in 2020 as compared to 4,817 cases in 2019. The year in which Jaipur recorded the maximum number of 6,107 cases, Mumbai recorded the second-highest number of cases at 5,556 in the same year.
According to the 2020 data, Delhi recorded a better average of cases in which they filed charge sheets, meaning the culprits were caught and brought to court. Delhi Police filed charge sheets in 44.5% of the total 4,445 economic offenses.
NCRB figures show that Jaipur Police registered 3,217 cases last year, which was almost 2,900 less than in 2019. However, with a rate of only 12.9%, the city had the lowest number of cases in which they filed charge sheets in 2020. The country’s financial capital Mumbai reported charge sheets in one percent of the 38.5% cases in 2020.

Earlier, Microsoft has also said in the conclusion of its 2021Global Tech Support Scam Research Report that, in the last 12 months, Indian customers have been the victims of online fraud the most. Its rate was around 69%, which was equal to 70% in the year 2018. At the same global level, online fraud fell by 5% to 59%. About 48% of India’s customers have been a victim of online fraud continuously. Compared to the year 2018, it has increased by 8 points, which is three times more than the world figures.
