According to WHO, every year around 1.25 lakh people die from snake bites all over the world. About half of these people who die are Indians. Every year about 60 thousand people lose their lives due to snakebite here. 60 percent of these deaths occur in the months of June to September alone. Of these, 97 percent of the deaths occur in rural areas while three percent of the deaths occur in urban areas. But this is only one aspect of snakebite. Apart from the death of so many people in the entire world every year, it also becomes the reason for the handicap of about three and a half lakh people.
Up to 94 percent of snakebite deaths in the country occur in rural India. The July 2020 study also shows that 70% of snakebite deaths accounted for in eight states–Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh (which includes Telangana, the recently defined state), took place in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Uttar Pradesh tops the list with 8,700 deaths in a year, followed by the states of Andhra Pradesh (5,200) and Bihar (4,500).
Along with the data, it has also been clarified that more than half of snakebite deaths occur in the months of June to September during the southwest monsoon season, when snakes and humans come in front of each other more in homes and outside. Actually, during this time the rainwater fills the snakes’ bills and Bambi, due to which the snake comes out in search of a safe place. This is also the time of snake mating. Because of this also his behavior remains a bit aggressive. And in this rainy season, farmers and laborers sow paddy, soybean, and millet crops, due to which the incidents of snakebite are even more during this time.
